Introduction
Up to 500 LED panels may be connected to each output port on a Tessera Processor, subject to sufficient bandwidth being available on the Gigabit Ethernet link to send video data to the panels. This depends on the panel type (specifically the panel’s pixel count), the refresh rate and the bit depth.
Tessera processors provide full control over the system refresh rate and bit depth, so these may be varied to achieve the desired balance of refresh rate, bit depth and pixel count. Adjustments to system refresh rate and bit depth affect all output ports simultaneously. These settings may be chosen regardless of the refresh rate and bit depth of incoming video signals as the processor will perform the necessary conversions.
Typically, best results are achieved when the system is configured to operate at the same refresh rate as the video source. If a different system refresh rate is selected, the processor will perform frame rate conversion as necessary by doubling or dropping incoming frames to match the selected system refresh rate. (This also allows connection of multiple sources with different refresh rates – the processor will convert them all to the chosen system refresh rate.) Interlaced signals are deinterlaced by the processor at the incoming field rate (i.e. i50 becomes 50 Hz progressive, i60 becomes 60 Hz progressive). When the system is configured to genlock to a sync or video input, the output automatically operates at the same refresh rate as the selected genlock source.
The output bit depth should ideally be set as high as possible, as even input signals that are natively 8 bit (such as DVI) or 10 bit (such as SDI) are processed internally at 12 bit, for example when adjusting input brightness, contrast or RGB gains. Reducing the system bit depth (especially to lower than the input source’s bit depth) may result in visible degradation of the image quality, depending on the content being displayed.

Notes
When connecting more than 50 panels to a single port, the signal must be ‘split’ using a Gigabit Ethernet switch into multiple daisy-chains of up to 50 panels each.
Redundant cabling requires 2 XDs for each group of panels
To support the maximum number of panels
The above figures are valid when the project is created for a single type of panel. If creating a project with multiple panel types and selecting the ‘map pixels directly to the canvas (1:1)’ option, the capacity per port can be calculated from the pixel capacities.
If creating a project with multiple panel types and not selecting the ‘map pixels directly to the canvas (1:1)’ option, the processor must do more work to convert the video feed to multiple pixel pitches. Please contact Brompton Support with details of the project, or use the calculator above, for guidance on the capacities supported by the processor in your desired configuration.
Rotation also requires more processing effort. Therefore each panel that is rotated off-axis (i.e. rotated by anything other than 0°, 90°, 180° or 270°) should be counted twice towards the capacity limits.
‘Creative’ fixtures (fixtures smaller than 16px in either dimension) require additional processing effort. Therefore the numbers in these tables should be used as a guide rather than the pixel count table. The rotation penalty (Note 4) does not apply to creative fixtures.
Fixtures smaller than 64px in either dimension require additional processing effort. Each dimension is treated as 64px if smaller.
